Residential Extensions
Working with a beautiful former schoolhouse, the project refurbishes and reconfigures its interior and provides a new contemporary living extension that opens to the garden.
A common issue in historic buildings, although full of character, the existing building lacked a large space for the family to spend time together and had relatively small windows which did not make the most of the views across the site.
We opened up the space with large windows and doors, extending into the garden to bring the outside in, enabling the garden itself to feel like an extension of the living space.
The proposal carefully connects the existing building with a new boot room entrance, workspace and living room which find the balance between large areas of glazing and the warm, material qualities of bothies and other rural stone architecture.
The extension is intentionally expressed as new addition to the building but works with vertical stone pillars which match the rhythm of those on the existing building.
